Port Hedland and the Global Economy

The Pilbara is already established as the powerhouse of WA’s economy, and in turn WA is fast gaining recognition as the powerhouse of Australia’s economy. WA, a state with just 11% of Australia’s population, produces a massive 40% of Australia’s exports. The Hedland Economic & Resources Forum in October 2011 brought nationwide attention to the concept that it’s not just Australia’s economy that WA is powering – the activites and output of our state, and in particular the Pilbara and Port Hedland, also has a very important influence on the global economy.

According to keynote speaker and WA Premier Colin Barnett, WA’s iron ore exports are expected to double and LNG exports to triple over the next decade. This further establishes WA as one of the key drivers behind Australia’s productivity to the rest of the world.

Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce President Bill Dziombak says that the Pilbara’s importance in the global arena can not be underestimated, and that it is not just due to the major resources players; every single business in the Hedland region is an important contributor to this success. Speaking at the 2011 Forum, he emphasized that “an important message for businesses in this community is to realise that what they actually do here every day [has] a significant impact on the global economy, and not just on the national economy.”
