We asked Katy our three signature questions to help you get to know her before the big event:
How long have you been in the Pilbara?Born and raised in Dampier in the mid 80s, completed primary school before heading away for boarding school and university. Have been living back in Dampier with my two beautiful young daughters since 2018.
Where does your passion for the Pilbara come from? Tell us what drives you to do what you do.My passion for the Pilbara comes from growing up, living and working in this remarkable part of the world. The Pilbara is a place that challenges you, humbles you, and ultimately shapes you. As a veterinarian, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with people across communities, stations, and towns. Through that, I’ve seen firsthand the strength, resilience, and grit that define the Pilbara spirit. Not just in the people, but in the animals, the landscapes, and the way of life.
Starting my own veterinary business here was about more than offering a service, it was about creating something that truly meets the needs of a unique region. I wanted to build a business that understood the long distances, the isolation, the unpredictability and still showed up, with care and commitment. What drives me is that connection. It’s the trust people place in you when they call on you at all hours, in all conditions. It’s the pride in being able to make a difference, even in small ways, in a community that gives so much.
And as a woman in business in the Pilbara, I’m driven by the opportunity to lead by example to show that you can build something meaningful from the ground up, even in the most remote corners of the country. Because out here, passion isn’t just a feeling, it’s a necessity.
Why are you excited to be part of Women of the Pilbara 2025?Being part of Women of the Pilbara 2025 is incredibly special to me—not just as a business owner or a vet, but as a woman raising two young girls as a single parent in this region. It’s an honour to stand alongside other strong, capable women who are helping shape the future of the Pilbara in so many different ways.
What excites me most is the opportunity to contribute to a movement that celebrates the strength, diversity, and leadership of women in the Pilbara. Events like this create space for connection and recognition—something that’s so important, especially in remote and regional communities where we often just put our heads down and get the work done.
But on a personal level, I’m here because I want my daughters to grow up knowing they can be bold, they can lead, and they can build their dreams—wherever they are. I want them to see that success doesn’t have to mean leaving the Pilbara, and that being a woman in business here is not just possible, but powerful.
Being part of this event means helping to pave the way—not just for the next generation, but for each other. That’s what makes this so meaningful to me.
