Dear Members & Partners,

This is the first of many updates I will share with you to keep you informed about what the Chamber is working on behind the scenes. Our goal is to ensure you stay up to date with the initiatives, advocacy, and opportunities we’re driving to support our local business community.

Among the initial priorities I have had since starting as CEO of your Chamber has to be to develop a new strategic plan.

Over the past two months, both the staff and committee of the chamber have been working with me to develop this plan. A plan that will be released in the coming months and will seek to elevate our status as both a source of business support services, and a driver of key advocacy issues important to our members and community.

I want to use the first of these monthly reports to members to focus on a major project focus of our new strategic plan, which is the current feasibility study being undertaken to ascertain the need for an additional business support facility in South Hedland.

We have labelled this project, “South Hub 2.0.”

Having been in Broome before coming to Port Hedland, I am cognizant with the issues facing emerging businesses in northern WA and one of those key issues is the quantity and affordability of commercial property. To arrive here and see how our four existing hub facilities are changing the fortunes of businesses within our membership has been heartening. At the same time, to learn that there are still many more emerging businesses in Hedland that need similar help to develop and grow their services to our community, has been a stimulus for our staff and committee to see if we can do more.

Currently, we have a survey out in the community asking anyone in business to give us feedback on how a South Hub 2.0 could best be designed and developed to meet our growing commercial business needs. To date, however, responses to our survey have been slow. Even though our office gets enquiries weekly from businesses looking for diverse and affordable business premises. A demand we are not able to meet.

Ensuring that our members have access to all the resources and facilities that they need is a priority of this committee and our staff. I therefore implore you, if you are an aspiring or emerging business owner, or know someone who is, please have them complete our survey. The success of a potential South Hub 2.0 will be how well it meets the needs of our members. Your feedback is therefore critical.
