Today the PHCCI team were treated to Part 2 of the Pilbara Ports tour with our tour guide extraordinaire Russell and Deputy Harbour Master Nava Gowtheepan.
We were able to see first hand from Alex the coordination of the shipping movements and communications with the vessels. The precision and skills involved are truly incredible , all driven by state of art soft wear , communication and expert personnel. With ships over 300 meters long being loaded to the exact centimetre with iron ore sailing on very specific tides there is no room for error.
Did you know the clearance to the bottom of the harbour on a fully loaded ship is only 25 centimetres ?
This month already has seen over 100 ships be berth and sailed loaded to head out across the world.
The Port of Port Hedland is the world’s largest bulk export port by tonnage. The port has a single entry channel which extends for approximately 40 kilometres and is impacted by a 7.4 metre tidal swing. Pilbara Ports has achieved a significant milestone, with a record 775.7 million tonnes of exports and imports passing through its ports in the 2024-25 financial year. This throughput equates to an estimated $153 billion worth of commodities across the four ports, highlighting the vital role Pilbara Ports plays in the global supply chain and the Australian economy.
The Port of Port Hedland contributed significantly to this achievement with a throughput of 577.7 million tonnes, a 1 per cent increase from last financial year, solidifying its status as one of Australia’s most important ports.
