Productivity Commission Engages Regional Businesses on Cost of Regional Airfares
Today as part of our advocacy supporting regional businesses and improving remote livability , we hosted the Productivity Commission who are conducting an inquiry into the cost of regional air fares.
Commissioners Martin Stokie and Catherine de Fontenay spoke candidly with our members and gained an honest perspective on the impact of flight costs , unreliability and the disconnection from essential services and loved ones.
The Commission has opened the first round of submissions and released a Call for Submissions paper outlining the Terms of Reference and background information. Submissions close on 15 March.

The Productivity Commission commenced an inquiry in October 2025 , into the determinants of regional airfares, focusing on passenger flights to and from areas outside Australia’s major cities, including regional, rural and remote communities. The inquiry will examine the factors influencing airfare pricing and availability and will provide policy recommendations to support a competitive, reliable and affordable regional aviation network.
